Education, water, and lasting change—where it’s needed most.

We are a volunteer-led nonprofit working to expand learning opportunities, strengthen schools in underserved regions, and support clean water and sustainable development—in partnership with communities in Africa and with African American neighbors here at home.

Why we exist

Too many students still attend schools without reliable classrooms, books, or safe drinking water. Families shouldn’t have to choose between a lesson and a clean cup. AfriDev was formed under Maryland law to take that seriously: we raise support, connect partners, and back practical projects in teaching, research, and community development—always with an eye toward dignity and long-term sustainability.

Our board and volunteers bring experience in education, public health, engineering, and community organizing. We don’t promise overnight transformation; we fund work that can be maintained locally and measured honestly over time.

What we focus on

These aren’t buzzwords on a grant application—they’re the lanes where we concentrate volunteer time and donor dollars.

  • Schools & learning

Scholarships, supplies, teacher support, and advocacy for facilities that make attendance possible—especially where resources have been thin for generations.

  • Research & teaching

Small-scale studies and training tied to real classrooms and community needs—not research that sits on a shelf.

  • Water & health basics

Wells, filtration, and sanitation partnerships chosen for upkeep and local ownership, because a tap that breaks in six months helps no one.

  • Sustainable development

Agriculture, energy, and income projects that reduce day-to-day vulnerability and free families to plan beyond survival.

  • Here in the U.S.

We also invest attention and programming in African American communities—mentoring, education events, and collaboration with local leaders—because our mission doesn’t stop at a coastline.
